Esquimalt Graving Dock - South Side Substation Replacement

Township of Esquimalt

As part of the safety upgrade of the power and communication systems at the Esquimalt Graving Dock, Public Works and Government Services managed the design and construction for a new Electrical substation at the South Jetty.

Westbrook Consulting was responsible for the civil engineering detailed design and construction engineering services, including topographic survey, identification of existing underground services, realignment of the south side watermain, design of the south side sanitary lift station, site grading, preparation of tender specifications, as well as routing of the proposed ducting.

Challenges included identifying the location of existing infrastructure, and determining the routing of proposed services due to the presence of existing buildings and other underground infrastructure. A significant factor to be aware of during both the design and construction phases was the influence of the tidal high water level on the infrastructure, building design, and installation.

Construction was completed in 2017.
