The Shire

The Opportunity

The Shire is a 90 unit residential development, consisting of three multi-family buildings, located on Quadra Street in the District of Saanich. The buildings were constructed over a common below grade parkade and featured storm water management and architectural water features throughout the site.

The Approach

The Shire is a 90 unit residential development, consisting of three multi-family buildings, located on Quadra Street in the District of Saanich. The buildings were constructed over a common below grade parkade and featured storm water management and architectural water features throughout the site.

Westbrook Consulting provided Civil Engineering design and construction inspection services for the project from the initial design concepts back in 2012, to detailed design work in 2015 and 2016, through to construction inspection in 2016 and 2017.

Among the challenges of the project were working with critical driveway grades to provide vehicular access to the underground parkade and surface parking areas within a relatively narrow access corridor.

Another challenge was grading the drainage from the storm water ponds and other water features to work with the large level areas present over the parkade structure.  In the end, with close coordination with the project superintendent, the project landscape architect and mechanical consultant, a routing for the drainage that worked for all was developed.

The project was completed in the late summer of 2017.
