Goldstream Sewer Extension

Municipality: City of Langford
Key Personnel:

The Opportunity

West Shore Environmental Services extended 400 m of sanitary sewer along Goldstream Avenue and Spencer Road to continue the expansion of the City of Langford municipal sewer network.

The Approach

Westbrook Consulting provided topographic survey, detailed design, tender, construction layout, construction inspection and contract management services for the project.

The project had many challenges including working in close proximity to large diameter active and inactive CRD Water supply mains, flat site grades and working on a busy roadway near a middle school. Careful attention to service connection grading was required to ensure all connections would flow by gravity. The project also required the sewer main to cross both under and over the large, active 1370 mm diameter concrete CRD Water supply main.

The main challenge that occurred in the construction phase was the encounter of the abandoned 900 mm diameter steel water main that was shown on record drawings as existing in an alternate location. The 900 mm diameter main was directly in the sewer alignment and consequently had to be removed entirely as no alternate sewer alignment was available.

The Result

The project was completed in June of 2014.
